H1N1 and University Sponsored Travel

Travel Notice

The University of Nebraska Office of the President has updated Executive Memorandum No. 25, which addresses the University's policy regarding sponsored travel to countries following issuance of a travel warning by the State Department and/or a Travel Health Warning by the Centers for Disease Control. The substance of the policy is unchanged; it has been updated principally to reflect new travel notice definitions enacted by the CDC in 2004.

(The policy pertains only to travel involving students and/or the general public. This policy does not apply to international travel that only involves faculty or staff members.)

Travel Related Insurance

With the H1N1 flu outbreak in many areas in the world it is important to review the university's insurance coverage and limitations if you travel outside the United States.

If you have any questions please call the UNL Benefits Office at 472-3101.

EMPLOYEE HEALTH INSURANCE

If you have the University of Nebraska health insurance coverage through Blue Cross/Blue Shield, you have worldwide health insurance coverage. This plan would be the coverage you would need if you get sick while traveling, whether you are on university business or on a personal trip.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

This BC/BS coverage provides for transportation for you to the nearest appropriate medical facility if you get sick, which would most likely be in the country you are in. Please note that the university's coverage does not provide transportation to the nearest United States affiliated hospital; therefore, some UNL travelers choose to purchase travel insurance that augments the university's medical coverage. These private insurance plans will pay for additional medical expenses while traveling outside the United States including medical travel back to the United States. In addition, these coverages also cover repatriation of your remains if necessary. Please check with the insurance you are purchasing to ensure it has repatriation coverage. (The university's insurance plan coverage does not cover repatriation of your remains to the U.S.) The UNL Benefits Office can help you locate these coverages. You may reach them at 472-3101.

OTHER HEALTH INSURANCE

If you do not have the university health insurance coverage and you are planning to travel outside the United States, you should check with your insurance company to review that coverage.

STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE

UNL offers travel insurance for students. This insurance only covers accident medical coverage and does not cover sickness or illness. More information on this coverage is can be found at http://bf.unl.edu/travelpolicy/StudentTravel.shtml
